Most mini-PC spec sheets bury the three or four numbers that decide whether a box works for your homelab under a dozen that do not. Start from the job, not the sticker.

Decide what it's for first

A mini-PC that is perfect for one job is mediocre for another, and the deciding spec changes completely between them:

  • Plex or Jellyfin lives and dies on the integrated GPU. The CPU barely matters.
  • Frigate needs a supported object-detection path - an Intel iGPU or an add-on Coral/Hailo.
  • Proxmox and a stack of VMs is a cores-and-RAM game.
  • A firewall (OPNsense/pfSense) wants fast, well-supported NICs and low idle power.

If you try to buy one box that maxes every spec, you overpay for capability you will never use. Pick the primary job and let it choose the spec. The recommender does exactly that if you would rather answer a question than read a table.

The iGPU is the transcoding engine

For a media server, the integrated GPU is the only spec that counts. Plex and Jellyfin hand transcoding to Intel QuickSync (or a discrete GPU) and the CPU sits nearly idle. So "which mini-PC for Plex" really means "which iGPU, and how many streams before it chokes."

Intel is the safe path. Iris Xe and 12th/13th-gen UHD graphics handle the most simultaneous 4K HDR transcodes; older UHD 630 covers a couple. AMD's iGPUs work in theory but Plex/Jellyfin support for their video engine lags Intel's, so unless you have a reason, choose Intel. The heaviest common load is 4K HDR tone-mapping, and it is what separates a 3-stream box from an 8-stream one. Watts matter more than the price tag

A home server runs 24/7, so its real cost is electricity, not the purchase price. Mini-PCs are brilliant here - most idle at 6 to 15 watts, which is why they run a homelab for a rounding error. But idle draw varies two to three times across boxes, and over a few years that gap outweighs the sticker difference. Read the idle watts, not the peak TDP, and run the numbers in the power calculator before you decide a "cheaper" box is actually cheaper.

NICs: count them, and check the chip

For anything network-heavy - a firewall, a Proxmox node with its own management link, a NAS front-end - the NICs decide the box. Two things:

  • How many. A second port lets you split WAN from LAN, or management from VM traffic, without a switch.
  • Which chip. Intel 2.5GbE (i225/i226) is the sweet spot. Avoid Realtek NICs if you run BSD (OPNsense, pfSense) - they are a known headache there. And watch the Intel i226-V link-drop bug: it hits some boards under load, has a driver/firmware workaround, and is worth confirming before you buy.

The slots decide what you can add later

The difference between a box you outgrow and one you extend is its expansion. Two slots matter:

  • A spare M.2 slot (a second NVMe or the Wi-Fi slot) takes a Coral or Hailo detector for Frigate - tiny, low-power, no case surgery.
  • A real PCIe slot takes a low-profile GPU, which is the only way to run local LLMs on a mini-PC. Most mini-PCs have no usable PCIe slot at all, and the ones that do supply only about 75 watts through it with no external power - so a big GPU means a DIY build with a real case and PSU, not a mini-PC.

If you might add an accelerator, buy the slot now. Whether a specific card actually fits a specific box - interface, slot, power - is what the build planner checks for you.

What you can mostly ignore

  • RAM and storage headroom do not gate transcoding or detection. Do not overpay for them on a media or NVR box.
  • Peak TDP is a thermal spec, not a running-cost one. Idle watts is the number.
  • Marketing CPU names. For a Proxmox node, look at PassMark and the thread count; for everything else the CPU is rarely the bottleneck.

Buy for the one job that matters most, confirm the iGPU or NICs that job needs, check the slots for what you will add later, and let the electricity math - not the price tag - break ties.
